“Joia Wood is not only talented but authentic.” - Frank Gutch Jr., Folk and Acoustic Music Exchange
“catchy and powerful.” - Acoustic Charlottesville
“a combination of Jeff Buckley and Ben Harper.” - The Hook
“one of the best female vocalists in the region.” - C’ville Weekly
Born in Los Angeles, to singer/songwriter J. Lalah Simcoe, a.k.a. Judy Fine of 1960’s girl-band The Womenfolk, Joia Wood picked up her mother's guitar at age fourteen and began composing her own music. Joia's Mother says,
“She sang before she spoke and danced before she walked”.
Joia has contributed backing vocals to the albums and performances of numerous fellow Charlottesville musicians including Amos Gilkey, Brady Earnhart, Monticello Road, and Shannon Worrell, and opened for Brian Vander Ark at the Gravity Lounge. She is perhaps best known for her haunting vocal work with Danny Schmidt.
In Danny's words, "Joia Wood has one of those miraculous voices which can bowl you over even at its most delicate whisper, and lull you even at its stormiest torrent. A true siren who will capture you with the effortlessness with which her voice can express every facet of the human heart."
Live From the Gravity Lounge on which she is joined by good friends, Trees On Fire, sold out of it's first pressing and is available for download below.
